Mac Miller - Wear My Hat

I like rap. I DO. And I always have, but for some reason I have a harder time getting my hands on new rap that I like than other stuff. There is so much shit out there (a problem that affects every genre—I know) that I’m always being bombarded with more rap that I DON’T like than rap that I do. But I have stumbled across a new keeper, the young, the fresh, the cute and catchy Mac Miller.
Wear My Hat was just a link I stumbled across while catching up on some emails last night, but I immediately tuned in and stopped everything else I was doing. Then I woke up singing it this morning and I couldn’t stop smiling. It made me remember that middle school moment…where you stole the boy you liked’s hat and posed with a cute little pout before running away with it hoping hard that he’d chase you. The giggling that would ensue and that warm feeling in your tummy because you are holding that boy’s emblem in your hands. So I’ve listened to it 5 more times.
Though my initial attraction to Mac Miller was based in this goofy boyish/girlish memory, I don’t mean to suggest that his raps are juvenile. I don’t think they are. He is boyish, and to be fair he’s only 19, but he’s got the right mix of swagger, boyish cute and really catchy stuff that I have found myself going from youtube video to youtube video all morning because I just keep liking what I hear. Furthermore, he doesn’t just rap… he also plays piano, guitar, drums and bass—an undeniably multitalented musician. I think he’s going to blow up pretty huge, pretty fucking soon I would bet. But who am I to even say that? The kid’s already got over 11,000,000 hits on multiple videos. What is famous these days?
What I like about this Mac Miller is that he’s got the mainstream catchy appeal, but without all the stuff that I so often hate about the rap I hear on TV and on the Radio. I get it, its cool if you can “drive up in your other, other benz” but personally I’d rather hear about Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza or Senior Skip Day.
I dare you not to like him.
