Creep on Creepin’ On - Timber Timbre
As I count down the days to summer, so have I been counting down the days to see Timber Timbre live. Counting down twice. Because I was so excited that after I bought tickets to see them here in Toronto I also bought tickets that require driving 2 hours to my hick hometown to see them again y’all. And all of this hype before Creep On Creeping’ On has even been released. I thought the show would be my first listen, but the fates have aligned in my favour yet again and the album was streamable yesterday.
The first time I ever heard Timber Timbre I was doing my usual ‘downloading-mix-tapes-off-random-blogs-while-i-am-obviously-supposed-to-be-studying’ routine that generally defined a day at the library in university. Nothing was catching my attention enough to distract me from the looming essay though and I was feeling let down by all my favorite blogs. But then I heard it—that sweet, slow and oh so low ‘oh oh oh oh’ announcing the beginning of ‘Demon Host’. That was almost 2 years ago now and that song’s heavy rotation hasn’t lightened up even a little bit. The whole self-titled album was a gem, hence my crazy excitement for the upcoming shows.
What I didn’t know, until recently, was that there was earlier Timber Timbre to hear. Since this discovery, Medicinals has become a bit of a morning ritual for me. It’s this folky-meets gospel-meets bluegrass thing that really starts my day off right. ’Like a Mountain’ is such a raw song but it gets stuck in my head for hours, and ‘Oh Messiah’ is a whole new way to experience ‘Twist and Shout.’ But enough about the old Timber Timbre, because the NEW Timber Timbre is here at last.
Creep On Creepin’ On is exactly what I’d hoped for. Timber Timbre maintains their paradoxical sound that manages to be so old school and simultaneously fresh, and so dark and deep but catchy and sunny at the same time. The single, ‘Black Water’ has been getting me through the final stretch of winter. Really, all i need is some sunshine… but I’ve been really loving the whole album. I find something new to like with every listen, and I’m certain the album has a ton to offer me…and you too of course. You can listen to it here, as you eagerly await my reports on my double Timber Timbre experience (that is what you’re doing, right?). Until then, enjoy. I’d say I hoped you were as excited as I am… but you couldn’t be!
